Learning, education and technology

Fifteen or twenty years ago nobody or very few people would have imagined the ways humans learn today and how technology affects them directly or indirectly, especially information technologies. The following writing presents some of the features as best as possible regarding this technological impact in today's education and learning process.

The 3 phases of education technology
Phase one includes a dynamic presentation with computers and it uses also a lot of digital visual aids. In phase number two regular text books are replaced by electronic books and the students can have access to a vast array of information such as the www. Regarding phase number two, here the student is not merely a passive recipient of information, but he himself creates and publishes new knowledge as he or she is motivated by the use of technology. In this last phase communication, collaboration and creation come into place. Even thou these phases seem separate they can be combined.

Today, how people learn revolves around technology, especially the newer generations. All around us is permeated directly or indirectly by technology. Nowadays people cannot do much without it, most persons would feel lame without the internet, or the cell phone and its messages.

As the reading pointed out `` Technology by itself does not guarantee learning``, a student can be surrounded by all technological advances , but if no one teaches him/her how to use it accordingly then he/she will not learn at all, but instead might incur into misusage of it.

The knowledge on how to use technology today has to be into every person`s mind, but not only the use thereof but how to use it appropriately. Technology itself is neutral (not good nor bad), meaning that it will be good if given an appropriate use, but destructive if given an inappropriate one. So, nowadays especially teachers and parents need to know how to use all the technological assets in an appropriate manner. Therefore, they can be able to teach the kids how to take great advantage of it, because if they do not know how to use it wisely, who can teach them?

Unfortunately today most people lack critical thinking and they just think that all in the internet is reliable or acceptable and then they become merely receptors of information that in many instances is filled with junk and superficiality. We seem to have become trashcans just opening ourselves to a huge array of stimuli and information that really affects our behavior and, sad to say, in many cases for bad. We have not only to know how to use technology, but I think the most important part has been belittled, which is that someone has to teach us how to analyze and respond to this new era of vast information.
